Scope and Contents Fragment of a story about MacLaine of Lochbuie capsizing. The story mentions that MacLean of Coll, MacLaine of Lochbuie and Saxon were out shooting on a Sunday and that [they all got into a boat] which capsized. On being rescued his man said to him, 'Fad bha [th]u os mo chionn san t saoghal cha bhi [th]u os mo chionn san a shaoghal thall.' An aside notes that 'On Mull side of Ulva Sound [there are] columns like Staffa.' [Am Muile/Isle of Mull, Caolas Ulbha/Sound of Ulva] The handwriting here...

Drawings and notes on the geology, particularly of parts of Ireland (including Dundalk, Wicklow) and Wales (including Anglesey, Glamorgan) and to a lesser extent Scotland and England. Reference is made to igneous rock at Kildare, carboniferous volcanoes in west Somerset and raised beaches at Jura.

Notes for 4 lectures on the 'Volcanic History of Britain', given to the Royal Institution in 1886. Sir Archibald Geikie looked at the emergence of types of geological formations against a geological timeframe and how they have been affected by various processes, especially the action of volcanoes and materials produced by them, within the natural world. He used examples from numerous locations from different parts of the British Isles.

Note about a cave 'Ua nan cathag nam cas dearg' [Uamh na Cathaig, Lios Mòr/Lismore] said to contain stalagmites and stalactites. Close to it, at Salen [An Sàilean], is a well, which is covered at half-flood and on which 'lianaiach' [sea-ware] grows. The note states that the last of the bird 'cathag nan casa dearg' [chough] was killed by a Rankin in Fort William [An Gearasdan, Siorramachd Inbhir Nis/Inverness-shire]. An illustration, possibly of a feather, is included.

Note about a ridge and boulders near Lonan [Lonain, Earra Ghàidheal/Argyllshire] including 'Lairig a fheoi' which is 'wher[e] Lonan begins at Barra Goillean [Barguillean]' and 'Ugh a gheoi' described as 'a boulder now'. Also noted are black stones in 'amair na h-aibhne' [the river bed] and on the side of the river at Clacha Dubha [Clachadow].
